“RICH, PAINTERLY BRUSH STROKES AND EVOCATIVE NUANCE OF COLOR...”

Martha Safra is a distinguished San Francisco Bay Area artist who works with oils and paints a wide range of subject matter. Her work is largely influenced by Impressionism and the Abstract Expressionist movement.  Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, and raised in the landscape of Utah and Arizona, Martha was always drawn to the drama and beauty of the desert and mountains. The shifting moments of color, light, and value, the variety of seasonal changes, and the paradox of harsh and gentle beauty inspired her to become an artist.  Martha moved to the Bay Area to attend Rudolph Schaeffer School of Design, and after a successful career in the field of design, returned to her true passion of oil painting.  She has studied with many prominent artists and has honed her skills, becoming well-known as an artist and teacher.

Ms. Safra’s expertise with concepts of design and composition, as well as her classical painting background and intuitive understanding of color, has given her the vehicle to evolve to her current status as an important painter of our time.  “I love the process in painting, the creative journey one travels while working. It takes thoughtfulness and insight to find your way from the beginning of a painting to an end that works as a unified, beautiful, and complete conclusion. I am passionate about creating the quality of luminous light, meaningful brushstroke, and pleasing color harmony, while maintaining the integrity of the design.”

“In working, you have to keep your focus on the whole painting. There are so many small parts to the painting, but what is important is the whole. Everything is interrelated and affects everything else...Just as it is in life. Sometimes, the painting obeys and fulfills your expectations. Other times, the painting has its own voice, and you must be sensitive to this and allow the unexpected. Serendipity!"
